Welcome Back!

Dear UFT Chapter Leaders, Delegates, and Activists,

Welcome back! The New Action/ UFT caucus is a network of union-proud organizers, and we want to make sure you know about us. Our caucus is the oldest progressive opposition caucus in the United Federation of Teachers – in existence since the mid 1980’s and still running strong today. We are independent and support the UFT in its campaigns we agree with and oppose the leadership when they do not represent the interests of the membership. Nearly 120 NAC members are serving today as delegates to our UFT Delegate Assembly, along with many chapter leaders, executive board members, and various other elected positions within our union. We offer support to Chapter Leaders, delegates, and other union activists to solve school-based issues and help conduct city-wide union activities.

JOIN today to be a part of our community, and work with us to pass resolutions that matter at the UFT Executive Board and the Delegate Assembly.

Here are some of our recent activities:

  • New Action, as a member of the United For Change coalition received 42% of the Active teacher vote United For Change won all 7 High School Executive Board seats. We post the minutes of all Executive Board meetings (as well as Delegate Assemblies) on our website, newaction.org.
  • New Action played a major role in scoring a historic victory in the recent UFT RTC elections this Spring. The RTC now represents 70,000 retiree members, and the Retiree Advocate slate (of which we were a part) received 63% of the vote and won by over 7,000 votes. As a result, we forced Michael Mulgrew to withdraw his support for Medicare “Dis”Advantage, which would have put retirees into inferior health plans. This win also means we have 25 officers and executive board members in the chapter, as well as 300 Delegates, who you will see at Delegate Assemblies. New Action recruited 98 of those delegates.

Our activities help shape policy in the Union for the better. In our elected positions, we will do whatever we can to help preserve and expand health benefits for our in-service members and fight to change Tier VI  pensions our members have had for the last 12 years.

Also, we are participating in a membership survey that is being circulated in the schools. This survey will help to identify the issues you and your staff feel are most important. Please fill out the survey here.

Nick Bacon is a co-chairperson at New Action Caucus. He is also an elected member of the UFT executive board
