Independent, Progressive, Influential

Now is the Time to Vote New Action!

New Action is the only UFT caucus that supports the leadership when they are right and opposes them when they are wrong!

New Action believes that Mayor Bloomberg and Chancellor Klein are the UFT’s main enemy. We work in a bipartisan way to achieve the best for UFT members.

New Action has a long record of achievement. Eight New Action members have been working on the UFT Executive Board. Our efforts on behalf of the members include:

NEW ACTION…

  • was the first caucus to call for a moratorium on school closings.
  • was the only caucus that endorsed Bill Thompson and urged the UFT leadership to also endorse. This failure was a huge mistake.
  • led the battle to develop an Action Plan to change the behavior or remove abusive administrators.
  • opposed Mayoral control of education and was the first to call for the firing of Chancellor Klein
  • the first caucus to call for an end to the war in Iraq and led the fight to make this UFT policy.
  • convinced the UFT to form three new committees: Action, Organizing and Social and Economic Justice. They meet regularly and are all co-chaired by New Action leaders.
  • was the first caucus to call on the union to investigate the drop in minority hiring over the past several years.
  • has six members on the Negotiating Committee

Position Paper December 2009

A New Action paper briefly reviews the conditions we currently face:

Educators are under attack. … decrease in the effectiveness of the UFT to counter the power of the DOE. … a young, new workforce … a lack of connection to unionism. …

…  corporate model…  top-down structure … no … collaboration … massive testing … merit and bonuses, and strongly anti-union. … breakup of large schools … Newer teachers are easier … to victimize  …  autonomy given to the principals and the laissez faire attitude of superintendents.  … news stories depicting teachers as incompetent (ATR’s) or dangerous (“Rubber room”). … national spotlight is focused … on teacher evaluation and creating more charter schools…

The past several years have been a disaster for our members. Working conditions are perhaps the worst in the history of the UFT.

…excessive paperwork… data … scripted lesson … individual student goals … teaching for the test. … abusive or incompetent administrators … absolute authority … constant creation of new small schools … assault on experience and seniority … willful opposition to … our legal contract.

Our latest: Health Care, post-Election, School Aides

We’ve posted our latest leaflet, from the November Delegate Assembly. Highlights:

On the UFT Resolution on Health Care:  We support this…  particularly… calling for a national demonstration in Washington, DC… [We] attempted to include a call for a single payer plan at the last UFT Executive Board.

On the Mayoral Election:  New Action is proud… we endorsed William Thompson… the only caucus in the UFT to do so! … Had the UFT and other labor allies backed Thompson the results might have been different. It was a mistake our members will suffer for.

On Support for School Aides:  Labor solidarity must be the order of the day.
